My first course of the Master’s of Health Studies program has been an invaluable course in enhancing my knowledge, skills and helping me create a strong professional identity in the digital world. I had learnt the most important lesson in the beginning of week one of the course which was the fact that time management and organizational skills were key to achieve long term goals. The professor had created weekly tasks and few assignments for all students which needed to be well organized and completed in a timely manner to prepare us towards our final goal which was the creation of an ePortfolio.
The construction of an ePortfolio served as a showcase of our professional accomplishments as well as a collection of professional resources accumulated during the period of this course. The creation of an ePortfolio was a tedious task which involved experimenting with numerous content curation tools and having immense patience to organize resources, images and written content. The journey of my first Master’s course gave me an incredible opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals from different provinces of Canada. The knowledge shared through the discussion forums as well as creation of joint blog posts gave me an insight into other healthcare professions and helped me understand how we all fit within the Canadian healthcare system. The assignments created by the professor familiarized me with the complex topic of health, its associated determinants as well as the multi-level approaches that help understand health issues. Interacting with healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds also gave me an awareness into the chronic diseases most commonly seen in their professions as well as the prevention and management options of these chronic diseases. It broadened my knowledge and horizons of thinking as a healthcare professional through researching about health issues in different population types such as the indigenous community and the vulnerable population. In addition, it helped stimulate my mind to think about future trends of healthcare in Canada as well as the existing barriers. Discussing and researching about future healthcare trends was the most beneficial part of the course since we as current healthcare employees need to adapt to future changes and apply them to minimize problems existing within the healthcare industry.
Overall, the process of creation of an ePortfolio, having numerous valuable discussions, performing weekly assignments as well as simultaneously gathering knowledge on the Canadian healthcare system within this course has been a fruitful learning experience. I am thankful to all our classmates as well as the professor who provided me with constant support, motivation, guidance and the learning resources to help me get through this journey.
