Creating a professional identity through the use of social media is crucial in today’s world. Now the question that arises is, “what kind of a professional identity does one want to create?”. This is an individual's own choice and can differ from person to person based on one’s professional goals. My professional identity incorporates my values which is abiding by the truth, enhancing my professional skills and focusing on continuing education.
Being a health care professional, I belong to the recently regulated profession of sonography that falls under the group of Medical Radiation Technologists as stated by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (Ministry of Health, n.d.). The provincial regulatory body in the province of Ontario that I am associated with is College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO). The federal regulatory body which is Sonography Canada is also my professional body which raises the voice of sonographer's on a national level. I abide by the professional standards set out by my regulatory bodies such as safe and effective delivery of ultrasound services, producing high-quality diagnostic images, following the appropriate disinfectant procedures and maintaining patient confidentiality (Sonography Canada, n.d.). In order to protect and secure my professional identity, I also pay liability insurance besides the regular membership fees in case of any client complaints.
The professional identity I currently possess is somewhat strong and I am gradually enhancing it by incorporating multiple skills and taking leadership roles in healthcare. However, my social media presence depicting my professional identity is not very strong. With the help of my first introductory course of the Master's in Health Studies program, I am hoping to create a professional presence on social medial platforms especially LinkedIn, so that I can showcase my professional identity and simultaneously grow my professional network. While building up my professional presence in the digital world, I also have kept in mind to keep the professional content meaningful, pertinent to the subject and concise to save the time of the recruiter or other professionals browsing through my profile.
